FREE -- Rita Morse and the Sinister Shadow [Kindle Edition]
Fourteen year-old Rita Morse is the kind of girl that the teen-hating
Shadow Regime hates. She won't put up with crap that isn’t fair. Like
the ban on teens her own cousin, Jerry, put up at his video game store.
After she toilet-papers the place to get back at him, the Regime, an
army of immortals working to oppress teens all over the world, adds her
to their list of threats.
That’s not good. Turns out that banning kids from stores is the least of their evil.
Because the Regime’s enemies always disappear.
Now
Rita’s in the biggest trouble of her life. She’s being stalked by
shadow people. Threatened. Even nearly kidnapped. The Regime's not the
only danger: they control countless humans around the world--including
her cousin. There’s nowhere to turn.
Rita must learn the Shadow
Regime’s reason for their war on teens—and her—or she won't make it
through her first week of high school.

FREE -- Don't Ever Change [Kindle Edition]
This is a SHORT STORY about 6750 words long which would translate to about 30 printed pages.
Don't Ever Change is a stand alone short story.
High
school was a time of fond memories for Lori. Twenty three years later,
she's back in town for her mother's funeral. Not wanting to deal with
family right away after a long drive, she roams around town, only to
find herself in front of her old school.
On a whim, she decides to
sneak through a hole in the fence and take a look around. The last thing
she expected was to find a classmate from long ago. Even more shocking
was the fact that he hadn't changed even a little bit; right down to the
OP shirt and parachute pants.
When Adam explains that he's been
going to school every year for the last twenty three years, it shocks
Lori. He shows her the yearbook where she wrote "Don't Ever Change".
Then he explains how it's her fault that he's still exactly the same as
when they went to school together, right down to the acne and braces.
How
would you feel about never being allowed to change? Perhaps you'll
think a little bit harder the next time someone asks you to sign their
yearbook.

FREE -- The Jungle Book [Kindle Edition]
The law of the jungle?intense competition for one's niche?seems to apply
to The Jungle Book, judging from the numerous editions jostling on the
bookseller's shelf. The centenary of publication is the justification
given for this avatar: but fortunately, it needs no excuse. All the
Mowgli stories, and the perennial "Rikki-tikki-tavi," appear to glorious
advantage in a handsome format. A manageable size, creamy paper, a
clear typeface, and generous margins are as inviting as the 17 masterly
full-page watercolors. They are beautifully composed, balanced but not
static, freely handled but without any loss of clarity. Mowgli and the
animals are characterized rather than idealized. Color and texture are
subtle but lush. These contrasts perfectly complement the tension
between order and "the jungle" evoked in Kipling's text. If survival of
the fittest indeed applies to publishing, this edition should have a
long life.?Patricia (Dooley) Lothrop Green, St. George's School,

Enin for aid, but the spell caster remains withdrawn from nearly every

consequences of such intended actions trouble Enin's very soul. An
understanding of balance has taught the wizard more than caution; it has
led him to the presence of a being of equal power, but a creature with
intentions of malice. Enin's unwillingness to interfere in the choices
of individuals is born of the belief that he must allow all those around
him to seek their own path as well as their own ultimate fate.

FREE -- The Sayings Of Confucius [Kindle Edition]
Confucius is considered one of the preeminent thinker and social
reformer of the traditional Chinese society. He lived in the sixth and
fifth centuries BC, roughly around the same time as many other classical
thinkers and religious figures. The philosophical system that was built
around his many pronouncements is known as Confucianism, and it has
remained one of the most important schools of thought in China and the
surrounding civilizations until the present time.
This translation of some of the more prominent saying of Confucius
dates from 1909. Consequently the language is a bit dated, but
essentially it is very clear and easy to understand. The transcription
of the Chinese names, however, is very different from the one that is
currently in use, so this book may not be the best source for scholarly
or research projects. However, if you are interested in just getting the
flavor of Confucian philosophy this is an excellent and very accessible
resource. The Kindle edition is very well formatted, with hyperlinked
references and footnotes.

FREE -- The Phantom of the Opera [Kindle Edition]
More than a love story, "The Phantom of the Opera" is a gothic tale of
obsession --leading to madness. The Paris Opera House and its hidden
rooms, and underground are perfect place to develop a horror story.
Leroux noticed this potential. His descriptions of the place are creepy
and in the end we start wondering if it is not a true story indeed.
Leroux was very smart, writing a novel like he was only reporting
something --and not creating a work of fiction. Therefore there are
police reports, newspapers' scraps, witness interviews. More than a
narrator, the person who is telling the story is only gathering useful
information for the reader.
His characters are real human beings --even the `ghost', than
throughout the narrative we realize that he is the one with most human
characteristics. Sometimes, Christine is a little stereotypical, mostly
when she says she wants to be `the mistress of her faith' or something
like it. And so is Raoul --but that doesn't diminish the qualities of
this engaging novel.

FREE -- Great Expectations [Kindle Edition]
An absorbing mystery as well as a morality tale, the story of Pip, a
poor village lad, and his expectations of wealth is Dickens at his most
deliciously readable. The cast of characters includes kindly Joe

Havisham. If you have heartstrings, count on them being tugged.

FREE -- Oliver Twist [Kindle Edition]
Oliver Twist was Dickens' second novel and one of his darkest, dealing
with burglary, kidnapping, child abuse, prostitution, and murder.
Alongside this gallery of horrors are the corrupt and incompetent
institutions of 19th-century England set up to address social problems
and instead making them worse. The author's moral indignation drives the
creation of some of his most memorably grotesque characters: squirming,
vile Fagin; brutal Bill Sykes; the brooding, sickly Monks; and Bumble,
the pompous and incorrigibly dense beadle. Clearly, a reading of this
work must carry the author's passionate narrative voice while being
flexible and broad enough to define the wide range of character voices
suggested by the text. John Wells's capable but bland reading only
suggests the rich possibilities of the material. Restraint and Dickens
simply don't go together. The abridgment deftly and seamlessly manages
to deliver all major characters and plot lines, but there are many
superior audiobook versions of this material, both abridged and
unabridged. Not recommended.

FREE -- Emma [Kindle Edition]
Of all Jane Austen's heroines, Emma Woodhouse is the most flawed, the
most infuriating, and, in the end, the most endearing. Pride and Prejudice's Lizzie Bennet has more wit and sparkle; Catherine Morland in Northanger Abbey more imagination; and Sense and Sensibility's
Elinor Dashwood certainly more sense--but Emma is lovable precisely
because she is so imperfect. Austen only completed six novels in her
lifetime, of which five feature young women whose chances for making a
good marriage depend greatly on financial issues, and whose prospects
if they fail are rather grim. Emma is the exception: "Emma
Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy
disposition seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence;
and had lived nearly twenty-one years in the world with very little to
distress or vex her." One may be tempted to wonder what Austen could
possibly find to say about so fortunate a character. The answer is,
quite a lot.

FREE -- Jane Eyre [Kindle Edition]
Charlotte Bronte's first published novel, and her most noted work, is a
semi-autobiographical coming-of-age story. Jane is plain, poor, alone
and unprotected, but due to her fierce independence and strong will she
grows and is able to defy society's expectations of her. This is
definitely feminist literature, published in 1847, way before the
beginning of any feminist movement. Perhaps this is one of the reasons
why the novel has had such a wide following since it first came on the
market. It is also one of the first gothic romances published and
defines the genre.

FREE -- Les Misérables [Kindle Edition]
Hugo's classic tale set against the backdrop of political upheaval in
19th-century France retains its timeless appeal in this notably
condensed rendition of the struggles of former convict Jean Valjean.
While the abridgment inevitably cuts many of the intricate subplots and
minor characters who enrich Hugo's vast tome, this suspenseful central
plot tracing Valjean's endeavor to emerge from desperate circumstances
while being pursued by the duty-obsessed Inspector Javert remains intact
and comprehensible to listeners. The principal characters retain their
epic proportions, and the major themes of redemption through good works
and the importance of authentic charity are undiminished. Narrator
Michael York adds vigor and distinct characterizations to the broad cast
of characters in this fittingly dramatic performance. Suitable for
collections that do not already contain one of the many audio versions
of this work (e.g., Audio Reviews, LJ 5/1/93).?Linda Bredengerd, Hanley

FREE -- The Scarlet Letter [Kindle Edition]
Novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne, published in 1850. It is considered a
masterpiece of American literature and a classic moral study. The novel
is set in a village in Puritan New England. The main character is Hester
Prynne, a young woman who has borne an illegitimate child. Hester
believes herself a widow, but her husband, Roger Chillingworth, returns
to New England very much alive and conceals his identity. He finds his
wife forced to wear the scarlet letter A on her dress as punishment for
her adultery. Chillingworth becomes obsessed with finding the identity
of his wife's former lover. When he learns that the father of Hester's
child is Arthur Dimmesdale, a saintly young minister who is the leader
of those exhorting her to name the child's father, Chillingworth
proceeds to torment the guilt-stricken young man. In the end
Chillingworth is morally degraded by his monomaniacal pursuit of
revenge; Dimmesdale is broken by his own sense of guilt, and he publicly
confesses his adultery before dying in Hester's arms. Only Hester can
face the future bravely, as she plans to take her daughter Pearl to
Europe to begin a new life. --The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of

FREE -- Curious Folks Ask: 162 Real Answers on Amazing Inventions, Fascinating Products, and Medical Mysteries (FT Press Science) [Kindle Edition]
In the vein of David Feldman’s Imponderables books, here’s an
interesting collection of questions and answers based on Seethaler’s
column in the San Diego Union Tribune. The format is straightforward:
first the question, then the answer. The questions are grouped into
categories—ingenious inventions, body parts, pesky pathogens, health
nuts, and so on—and the answers range in length from slightly more than a
page to a few sentences. It’s the kind of book you read a bit at a
time, and it’s just the thing for anyone who has been wondering why some
people blink more than others, why California requires the use of snow
tires in winter, why you don’t keep your eyes open when you sneeze, or
what eyelashes are for. Not as lively or as entertaining as the
Imponderables books, probably because the questions are generally a bit
duller, the book is still informative and reasonably entertaining.
Trivia fans will find much to amuse themselves with here. --David Pitt

FREE -- A Tale of Two Cities [Kindle Edition]
Novel by Charles Dickens, published both serially and in book form in
1859. The story is set in the late 18th century against the background
of the French Revolution. Although Dickens borrowed from Thomas
Carlyle's history, The French Revolution, for his sprawling tale of
London and revolutionary Paris, the novel offers more drama than
accuracy. The scenes of large-scale mob violence are especially vivid,
if superficial in historical understanding. The complex plot involves
Sydney Carton's sacrifice of his own life on behalf of his friends
Charles Darnay and Lucie Manette. While political events drive the
story, Dickens takes a decidedly antipolitical tone, lambasting both
aristocratic tyranny and revolutionary excess--the latter memorably
caricatured in Madame Defarge, who knits beside the guillotine. The book
is perhaps best known for its opening lines, "It was the best of times,
it was the worst of times," and for Carton's last speech, in which he
says of his replacing Darnay in a prison cell, "It is a far, far better
thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest
that I go to, than I have ever known." -- The Merriam-Webster
Encyclopedia of Literature

FREE -- The Awakened: Book One [Kindle Edition]
THE HISTORY: Over five thousand years ago, a renegade faction of angels
abandoned the spiritual realm and began their inhabitation of earth.
Worshiped as gods for their wisdom and power, they corrupted the realm
of the physical and forever altered the course of history.
THE
PROPHECY: Amidst the chaos of a dying world, a lone voice foretold the
awakening of a warrior who would bring an end to this evil perpetrated
against all of creation. But with the cataclysmic destruction of earth
and rebirth of humanity, the prophecy went unfulfilled and eventually
faded from the memory of our kind—until now!
THE AWAKENED: The
physical dimension is fractured. What remain now are numerous fragmented
worlds moving simultaneously through time, sharing a common history,
connected only by a guarded portal. On a parallel earth, in the city of
Bastul, Colonel Adair Lorus disappears while investigating the death of
an informant, triggering a series of events which will tear his family
apart and set in motion the resolution of an ancient struggle. Kael,
sentenced to death after rising up against the cruel leadership of his
new step-father, is rescued from prison and trained in the arts of war
by a mystical order of clerics. Excelling in every aspect of his
training, Kael inwardly struggles to give himself fully to the methods
of his new family, or the god they worship. Maeryn, bitter over the
disappearance of her husband and supposed execution of her son, fears
for her life at the hands of her newly appointed husband. Finding
comfort and purpose in her unborn child, she determines to undermine his
authority by reaching out to an underground social movement known as
the Resistance. After being forced from his home, Kael’s former mentor,
Saba, uncovers a clue to Adair’s disappearance. Sensing a connection to
his own forgotten past, Saba begins an investigation which leads to the
discovery of a secret military organization operating within the Orudan
Empire.
In book one of his debut series, Jason Tesar delves into
the heart of an ancient legend, embarking on an epic saga that will
journey from earth’s mythological past to its post-apocalyptic future,
blending the genres of fantasy, sci-fi, and military/political suspense.

Swiss medical student Victor Frankenstein discovers the secret of life
(which he never reveals, lest someone repeat the mistake). He then puts
together a body, essentially a man, from various corpses. He then
becomes horrified by the creature he has built, and abandons. The
creature, suffering a great deal of neglect and abuse, still manages to
get a thorough education, and learns of his lineage. After murdering
Victor's younger brother, and framing the family maid, the creature
tells his (admittedly) sad tale to his "father", and then demands a
mate. Victor, in a panic, agrees, then thinks better of it at the last
moment, destroying the new bride. In retaliation, the creature murders
all of Victor's loved ones (including his wife), and leads Victor on a
merry chase across the world.

The story chronicles the adventures of a young girl named Dorothy Gale in the Land of Oz,
after being swept away from her Kansas farm home in a storm. Thanks in
part to the 1939 MGM movie, it is one of the best-known stories in
American popular culture and has been widely translated. Its initial
success, and the success of the popular 1902 Broadway musical which Baum
adapted from his original story, led to Baum's writing thirteen more Oz books. The original book has been in the public domain in the US since 1956.

Mistress Mary is quite contrary until she helps her garden grow. Along
the way, she manages to cure her sickly cousin Colin, who is every bit
as imperious as she. These two are sullen little peas in a pod, closed
up in a gloomy old manor on the Yorkshire moors of England, until a
locked-up garden captures their imaginations and puts the blush of a
wild rose in their cheeks; "It was the sweetest, most
mysterious-looking place any one could imagine. The high walls which
shut it in were covered with the leafless stems of roses which were so
thick, that they matted together....
'No wonder it is still,' Mary
whispered. 'I am the first person who has spoken here for ten years.'"
As new life sprouts from the earth, Mary and Colin's sour natures begin
to sweeten. For anyone who has ever felt afraid to live and love, The Secret Garden's
portrayal of reawakening spirits will thrill and rejuvenate. Frances
Hodgson Burnett creates characters so strong and distinct, young
readers continue to identify with them even 85 years after they were
conceived. (Ages 9 to 12)

FREE -- Dracula [Kindle Edition]
A naive young Englishman travels to Transylvania to do business with a
client, Count Dracula. After showing his true and terrifying colors,
Dracula boards a ship for England in search of new, fresh blood.
Unexplained disasters begin to occur in the streets of London before the
mystery and the evil doer are finally put to rest. Told in a series of
news reports from eyewitness observers to writers of personal diaries,
this has a ring of believability that counterbalances nicely with
Dracula's too-macabre-to-be-true exploits. An array of voices from
talented actors makes for interesting variety. The generous use of sound
effects, from train whistles to creaking doors, adds further
atmosphere. Lovers of mysteries and horror will find rousing
entertainment in this version of a classic tale.

FREE -- Alice's Adventures in Wonderland [Kindle Edition]
Source of legend and lyric, reference and conjecture, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
is for most children pure pleasure in prose. While adults try to
decipher Lewis Carroll's putative use of complex mathematical codes in
the text, or debate his alleged use of opium, young readers simply dive
with Alice through the rabbit hole, pursuing "The dream-child moving
through a land / Of wonders wild and new." There they encounter the
White Rabbit, the Queen of Hearts, the Mock Turtle, and the Mad Hatter,
among a multitude of other characters--extinct, fantastical, and
commonplace creatures. Alice journeys through this Wonderland, trying
to fathom the meaning of her strange experiences. But they turn out to
be "curiouser and curiouser," seemingly without moral or sense.
For more than 130 years, children have reveled in the delightfully non-moralistic, non-educational
virtues of this classic. In fact, at every turn, Alice's new
companions scoff at her traditional education. The Mock Turtle, for
example, remarks that he took the "regular course" in school: Reeling,
Writhing, and branches of Arithmetic-Ambition, Distraction,
Uglification, and Derision. Carroll believed John Tenniel's
illustrations were as important as his text. Naturally, Carroll's
instincts were good; the masterful drawings are inextricably tied to
the well-loved story. (All ages) --Emilie Coulter
